The Witches Are Here: Wicked in Manila
Oh, what a celebration we’ll have today! Thank goodness!
(SPOT.ph) Our neighbors in Singapore have had the chance to see Jemma Rix and Suzie Mathers flesh out the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, and The Good Witch of the North, Glinda. Talk of the Australian cast reprising their roles here in Manila began a few months ago but fans were apprehensive about the news. It would be too heartbreaking if the rumor turned out to be false, but now, it’s official. Wicked is set to open on January 22, 2014 at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Let the magic begin!
Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz comes from a rich history that begins with L. Frank Baum’s tale of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that turned into the silverscreen delight that was The Wizard of Oz in 1939, which in turn became the basis for Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
The witches of Oz
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz made its Broadway debut in 1902 but there was always something about The Wicked Witch of the West. The musical extracted the magic out of Maguire’s novel and allowed the audience to see Oz beyond Dorothy Gale’s perspective. But right now, we are feeling as magical as Dorothy did when she first landed in Oz because 10 years after the initial production of Wicked, the witches are finally here in Manila.
