Sneak Peek: Art Fair Philippines 2016 is bigger and more exciting than ever
We're so going to be there!
(SPOT.ph) After the great success of the first three, there is no other way to go but up for Art Fair Philippines 2016. Every year since its launch in 2013, the fair has only gotten better at putting the spotlight on the country’s contemporary art scene, thanks to old favorites, fresh faces, and plenty of surprises. For its fourth edition, it promises an exciting lineup of artists, more participants, and a wider audience as it takes over three levels of The Link carpark in Makati City from February 18 to 21. Basically, there’s going to be more art than ever, and it’s the kind of overwhelming feeling we love.
Here are five fresh and exciting things to look forward to in Art Fair Philippines 2016.
From 33 last year, there are 40 participating galleries this year. Among them are Altro Mondo Arte Contemporanea, West Gallery, MO_Space, Pinto Art Gallery, Finale Art File, Silverlens, Vinyl on Vinyl, and more. Metro Manila’s leading galleries are joined by a wide roster of galleries from Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
A new addition to the fair is the lecture theater, fondly called the "lecture lounge" by organizers Trickie Lopa, Lisa Periquet, and Dindin Araneta. The theater will be devoted to the fair's educational component, ArtFairPh/Talks. There will be daily talks about art history, the art market, and current practices in contemporary art, organized by the Ateneo Art Gallery. When there are no artist talks, everyone can lounge around the lecture theater and browse through the art reads available.

What does “installation art” really mean? Learn more from Leeroy New, one of the leading installation artists in the country, along with artists Ling Quisumbing Ramilo and Raffy Napay. At Maculangan (who’s also a featured photographer) will tell you more about contemporary photography. Lectures about art insurance for collectors are also part of the lecture series.
Beyond the Link
Through the four days of Art Fair Philippines, there are parallel events that are planned around the city. The Museum Foundation of the Philippines will organize tour schedules in selected art institutions including the National Museum, U.P. Vargas Museum, Ateneo Art Gallery, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
One of the events we're most excited about? Ballet Philippines’ dance performance of Gabriel Barredo’s captivating installation Opera at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Meanwhile, Christie’s will host artist talks, panels, and lectures on topics related to Asian and international art for free.
Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan headline the fair’s Special Exhibits
Eight featured artists
What else can you expect in the gathering of the best in Philippine contemporary art? Ready yourself for the showcase of featured artists such as Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, Mark Justiniani, Mac Valdezco, and more. For the first time, the fair will feature a photographer: At Maculangan. Whether you’re familiar with them or not, this lineup makes the P150 ticket price seem like a bargain.
