(SPOT.ph) It's not often that you see a whole island in the Philippines that's free from the threats of commercialism, the negative impact of mining activities, and just general exploitation of local biodiversity. But Danjugan is one of the few. Through the efforts of Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation and its supporters since the '90s, this 43-hectare island off the coast of Cauayan in Negros Occidental remains a sanctuary where flora and fauna continue to flourish. And like the many places in the Visayas, Danjugan was badly hit by Typhoon Odette in December 2021. To raise funds for rebuilding and rehabilitation, more than 30 artists come together in a group exhibition titled the island is calling from January 14 to February 28 at the Orange Project Gallery in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The fundraising exhibiti features Danjugan-inspired artworks by local artists like Aeson Baldevia, Alexandria Mesias, Anika Marie Loquite, and many more. Most of the pieces were made on "circular canvas."

"Nature communicates through the interconnected ecosystems of which we are intricately a part of. Her language is life itself. We are part of what She is. Seeking her voice is like a dancing leaf wondering when the wind will come. Every now and then, in the silence of our thoughts, we sense Nature's perpetual presence. She talks directly to our emotions, letting us feel we are connected beyond our human understanding. We feel the truth in our oneness even if we have yet to grasp it in full," writes Guenivere Decena in the exhibition notes posted by Orange Project.
