Darna Is About to Become a Dance Musical
Auditions just started!
Pilipino Komiks by Philippine Ballet Theatre, June 2017
(SPOT.ph) You may have, in one way or another, heard of Filipino superhero Darna. She was created for Pilipino Komiks by writer Mars Ravelo in 1950, and has since been featured in other media—from films spanning four decades to a ballet production first staged in 1993. In 2018, theater arts students of the College of Saint Benilde presents its own take on Ravelos' character through a dance musical titled Ding Ang Bato!
Expected to run in May, the dance musical will be under the choreography of Denisa Reyes and supervision of Christine Crame, chairperson of the college's dance department. Tuxqs Rutaquio is joining in as the production designer.
Reyes, a recipient of the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 2015, jumpstarted her career in dance theater in 1989 with the production of Philippine Educational Theater Association's Diablos. She is the creator of Neofilipino, an annual contemporary dance concert that started in New York in 1987.
Ding Ang Bato! runs in May 2018 at the College of St. Benilde School of Design, Malate, Manila City. For updates, follow Benilde's Arts & Culture Cluster on Facebook.
