BenCab Turntable Sold Out in Just One Day

And it was just the preselling!

( Before music streaming, downloading, CDs, and cassette tapes, there was the 12-inch phonograph record—or what we all know as vinyl. Sure, it was huge and as big as a pizza and can only be played through a turntable that's as huge as a table (we exaggerate, of course), but purists swear by its top-notch playback quality that's incomparable to what we have today. And yes, this item from long ago is making a comeback for a while now as proven by the release of the limited-edition Rega x Bencab x Secret Fresh P3 Turntable.

And by limited, we mean 100 pieces that have been sold out in just one day. Secret Fresh, an art gallery and vinyl toy shop located at Ronac Art Center in San Juan, posted an announcement on their Facebook page on November 24, past 1 a.m. You'd think that people would miss it, but gallery owner Christian Cheng revealed to that all stocks were vouched for in a flash.

"I am close friends [with the] distributor of Rega here in Manila. Kinuwento niya sa akin na pwede kaming [magpagawa sa] Rega to make a limited-edition turntable for our gallery," Cheng narrates about how the project started. Rega, which is an England-based audio company, has been in the business since 1974. They're known for their turntables that are now only high-powered, but also imbibes minimalism.

Cheng's first thought for the design was something from National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto "BenCab" Cabrera. "Whenever I'm in Baguio, pinapakinig niya ako sa mga plaka niya. Super hilig sa vinyl," he recalls. Secret Fresh and BenCab chose the best piece to be digitally reproduced for the turntable: a rendition of "Sabel," which is recurrent in all of the artist's works through the decades.

The original plan was for Secret Fresh to only sell 50 pieces, but it turns out that Rega has a minimum order of 100 pieces. We're just glad that they doubled the number (secretly, we're hoping they'd order more from Rega).

The Rega x Bencab x Secret Fresh P3 Turntable is made in England and available exclusively at Secret Fresh Gallery. Buyers who reserved a stock will get to see it up close on December 1 at the gallery's newest space, "The Deck," located at the fourth floor of Ronac Art Center. This coincides with the launch of Desnudas, which features BenCab's nude sketches.

Desnudas opens on December 1, 6 p.m. at Secret Fresh "The Deck" Gallery, Ronac Art Center, Ortigas Avenue, San Juan City. For more information, follow Secret Fresh on Facebook.
