(SPOT.ph) New York City pizza. It’s what dreams are made of. While there are those who will always dismiss the merits of the typical NYC slice when comparing it to its Roman counterpart, we say it falls nothing short of perfect. The crisp and chewy crust, sweet and tangy tomato sauce, waxy cheese and bubbly, blistering edges of NYC-style pizza will always reign supreme.
"It's all about the crust," says executive chef Cuit Kaufmann. Born and raised in lower Manhattan, like most New Yorkers, Cuit grew up on the charms of reheated pizza with toppings of perfect proportion. "We wanted to bring that experience of a casual pizza joint to Manila-a place where you line up and order your slice before you sit down for your meal." And, just like in New York, folding a slice of pizza at Nolita is an art form of sorts. In fact, a how-to diagram is printed on every take-out box.
With 16 variations in rotation, Nolita is without a doubt the new go-to place for pizza fiends. Bestsellers include their slices of Chicken Parmesan (P230), Tomato and Garlic (P170), and Wild Mushroom Walnut Ricotta, Spinach, and Artichoke (P220). All pizza slices are from an extra-large 20-inch pie.
"We try to make the pizza as healthy as possible," says Kaufmann, "Pizza places aren't traditionally known to be healthy but we try to make everything better by using the freshest ingredients, nothing artificial." In fact, Nolita's iced teas are herbal and their specialty drinks, Ginger Lemonade and Watermelonade (P160)-served "virgin" or spiked-are squeezed from fresh ingredients.
But, of course, there is more here than just pizza at Nolita. Also on the menu are all-time American favorites like the Nolita Burger (P420)-which consists of an Angus beef patty served on a freshly made brioche bun, topped with bacon, blue cheese, caramelized onions, and a fried egg. They also have a Regular Burger (P250) and a Cheeseburger (P320). Those seeking comfort food can go for a bowl of Mac and Cheese (P330).
The heavenly Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich (P230) and a spicy bowl of Beef Chili (P330) or Honey Garlic Chicken Wings (P330) both pair perfectly with the selection of craft beers available, like Marzen (P170), IPA Big Eye (P200), and Golden Monkey (P260).
Toothsome desserts are also available and should not be missed. While the giant slice of the delicious Peanut Butter and White Chocolate Tiramisu (P280) gets all the attention, the Italian Cannoli (P85)-a crisp flaky pastry shell filled with sweet ricotta cream, garnished with chocolate chips and pistachios and finished with candied orange rind (P85) is surely the sugar sleeper.
Nolita will begin offering pizza delivery within Fort Bonifacio sometime this month and are planning extended service hours (until 2 a.m. on weekdays and until 5 a.m. on weekends).
