( When Hillel the Elder concocted the first sandwich in the first century BC, it was nothing more than nuts, fruits, herbs, and wine stuffed between two matzohs. Since then, ingredients have become more sophisticated. Filled with foie gras or slathered with PB&J, however, sandwiches have remained a flavorful and nutritious go-to for easy "al desko" dining.



But in this country where rice (and some three varieties of viands) dominates the meal category, sandwiches take a backseat-stuck in the snack zone and relegated to tuna spreads or a slab of cheese in between two slices of bread. A stop at the newly opened Sandwicheese! along Katipunan Avenue, however, can quickly change that notion. Sandwicheeses, tagged as famous restaurant chain Banapple's "lil bro," is helmed by Banapple owners GJ and Maricel Jimenez-with the latter resuming her position as head of the kitchen. According to GJ, everything is made in-store and though the ingredients are simple, they combine to make something "extraordinary."


Rustic but a shade retro (check out those checkered floors), Sandwicheese is a cozy space ideal for a peaceful afternoon with a book, a laptop, or anything that leaves you with a free hand. Forget dainty finger food; here, sandwiches are generous smorgasbords of flavor, texture, and lots of cheese; and they are deliciously messy. We won't mind stuffing our faces to an order of Drippin' Roast Beef Sandwicheese (P160), a savory mix of sundried tomato cream cheese, caramelized onions, mozzarella and parmesan, and a cornmeal bun. Meanwhile, bangers fans shouldn't leave without trying the Signature Frankfurter Sandwicheese (P145)-the secret is in the crispy-firm but juicy sausage slathered with three cheeses and a special sauce.

Like a true lil bro, Sandwicheese also emulates a bit of Banapple in its menu. The Hickory Shredded Pork Sandwicheese (P160), for example, is an easy take on Banapple's saucy Hickory Smoked Barbecued Ribs. The very rich and savory Veggie Sandwicheese (P150), on the other hand, bursts with mushrooms, onions, and peppers.


In the grand scheme of sandwiches, we know of only one expert. Unfortunately, he's stuck in '90s television. We're no Joey Tribbiani, but having seen enough Friends episodes, we're sure he'll rub his belly to Sandwicheese.
