(SPOT.ph) The sun greets you brightly when you enter Ally’s All-day Breakfast Place. No, really. A light fixture shaped like a grinning sun angled at eye level is the first thing that’ll catch your gaze in this yellow-and-orange space. More than the framed inspirational messages on the wall, more than the Precious Moments-esque figures illustrated on the tiled tables, even more than the mouthwatering assortment of cupcakes and truffles on the counter.

"We wanted it to be feel-good," says owner Ally Mingo of their interiors. Mingo, who runs the place with her fiance, Josiah, added, "Like it’s always sunny here."

For a community brimming with restaurants and bars, their two-month old hub is the first breakfast spot in Teachers Village, and with the current popularity of all-day breakfast places, it wasn’t long before Ally’s had gathered a humble cult following of regulars who have already gotten into the habit of ordering "the usual."

You get to name your creations, too. Behind those name tags are more inspirational messages to perk up your day.

Our usual-when we come back, that is-would be our very own designer waffles and pancakes. A sheet of paper is handed out at the beginning, kind of like a test: waffles or pancakes? But what flavor? Toppings? Check all that apply. Syrup? Sides? The bacon looks good. If you’re dreaming of the yummiest, fluffiest chocolate pancakes lathered with Nutella, vanilla ice cream, topped with whipped cream, then crowned with chocolate chips, wake up and head over to Ally’s. She might just be able to whip that up for you.

Ally’s also has non-breakfast food for people who don’t want to eat breakfast at a breakfast restaurant.

But for those who can’t be bothered with such important decisions early in the morning, Ally’s also has signature pancakes derived from classic combinations like Banana Peanut Butter (P210), Blueberries and Cream (P220), and Death by Chocolate Overdose (P280). Each features that same downy consistency and homey presentation that makes breakfast especially comforting.

We just can’t get enough.

The tapsilog (P130) is, of course, expected to be good. Mingo is also the brains behind the equally cultish Tapa Zone in Cubao. The extra flavorful Pinoy breakfast favorite, the tapa is more salty than sweet, and with more bite than we’d expected, but the subtle shades of heat from the toasted garlic flakes jibes beautifully with the garlicky rice and mildly flavored eggs.

Speaking of eggs, there’s a special touch to the way Mingo treats them, which deserves special recognition particularly for the luscious Cheesy Bacon Tomato Fritata (P130). The plate-sized dish is a whirl of texture and flavor with slivers of tomato, green bell peppers, and tiny chunks of bacon coming together seamlessly in every forkful. The Cinnamon French Toast, just one of the many new items introduced in June, is a no-frills classic with the perfect sprinkle of cinnamon to make that sweet, fragrant spice pop without being too overwhelming for the start of the day. And boy, what a start of the day you’ll have at Ally’s.
