(SPOT.ph) If you ever find yourself at Burgos Circle on a Friday night, you will likely see its newest gastropub, Burgers & Brewskies, bursting with diners. With its range of inventive savory dishes and impressive selection of craft beers, cocktails, and single malts, the newbie venture owned by Francis Balbarin, Mike Floro, and Marc Nocon is a hit among young professionals-making a post-work wind down imperative in the area.

 

Burgers & Brewskies draws inspiration from the owners' stay in New York where they held backyard barbecue cookouts for friends and Balbarin honed his creative chops by serving burgers with his own twist. Traces from that former life are evident in the American pub ambiance complete with mismatched modern furniture in cool, earthy tones; quirky accents like a beer bottle chandelier); and intimate dim lighting. Now based in the Philippines, the trio aims to wow the Manila palate with "daring and innovative" burgers: "We like to take chances and push the envelope on our burgers."

 

Call the Nurse

Instant favorites are the jaw-dropping gargantuans Call the Nurse (P280) and Kandi (P265)-the former, a symphony of spiced mustard aioli, B&B cheese sauce, seared mac and cheese, and honey sriracha bacon while the latter is a delicious mash-up of roasted garlic aioli, B&B cheese sauce, onion confit, and spiced candied bacon. Still, for others looking to brave their suite of burgers, B&B has more challenges on the menu: Forbidden Fruit (P220), served with picked apples; Relish (P225), served with tomato jam, basil garlic pesto, and pickled onions; Neat (P180), served with onion confit; Cloud (P230), served with balsamic glazed shiitakes with dried figs; Flipped (P215), served with roasted tomatoes and fried onion strings; and the Heisenberg (P250), served with blue cheese, jicama celery slaw, and bacon vinaigrette.

 

B&B also has another new flavor, the Sinwich, which will soon be available. The burgers are 1/3-pound patties cooked medium for tenderness and flavor, tucked in a brioche bun and served with shredded lettuce (on top of everything else).

 

Sesame Sriracha

For non-burger lovers, the Sesame Sriracha Chicken Wings (P195) infused with a touch of honey and sesame come highly recommended. The wings are hot, about an 8.5 out of a 10 on the spiciness scale, so your taste buds shouldn’t take them lightly. But there are other varieties like the Zesty BBQ (P195), Honey Garlic (P195), Sweet Chili (P195), and Buffalo (P220). Customers mustering up the courage to go big with the Call the Nurse can procrastinate with the Wedge Salad (P180), Chili and Chips (P160), Cuban Missile (P120) a.k.a. grilled sweet corn, Kick-Ass Spuds (P85), S.P.F. (P65) a.k.a. sweet potato fries, PoW (P95) a.k.a. potato wedges, and Chili Cheese Fries (P160).

Chocolate Pudding

 

For all the extravagance depicted in their burgers and sides, however, there’s only one dessert: the Chocolate Pudding (P85)-rich dark chocolate custard topped with crunchy cinnamon oatmeal streusel.

 

But don’t forget the "brewskies" part in this establishment. Beers like Katipunan, Hitachino, Slaapmustke, Blue Moon, and Sam Adams are perfect companions for the items on the menu. For single malts, try the Yamazaki 12 years and Lagavulin 16 years. The owners also recommend mojitos, margaritas, and lychee martinis for lighter drinks, all of which priced at only P60 a glass every day during happy hour  from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
