New Restaurant Alert: Kitchen 1B at Legaspi Village, Makati
How does this fare against Apartment 1B?

Tel. No. 403-5405, 843-2392

(SPOT.ph) This is the ideal kitchen. Bright, busy, cute with kitsch like linen statements placemats and aprons, mismatched chair covers, and even oversized printouts of refrigerators on the walls turning it into something domestically cheerful. It's a place that begs you to reach for your camera phone and start clicking, and the best part is that in this kitchen, you don't have to cook.
It’s a bright and cheerful space.
See the fridge?
Kitchen 1B's menu is far from the recognizable classics of its sister restaurant, Apartment 1B. It starts with breakfast early morning to heavier mains throughout the rest of the day. Kitchen 1B is Marivic Diaz Lim's more health-conscious effort, with comfort dishes seasoned with an extra touch of personality.
Grilled Mango Barbecued Chicken
The server recommends the Grilled Mango Barbecue Chicken (P530) as the must-try, advice you would do well to follow if you like an uncomplicated but satisfying profile. It's a pair of boneless thighs from free-range, probiotic, hormone-free chickens with the skin kept on, locking the chicken's original juices together. Gravy is rendered impractical against the Filipino-friendly sweet glaze that layers on enough flavor and complements the chicken's natural rich taste. It doesn't come with rice, unfortunately.
The Lamb Curry (P690) teases rather than assaults the taste buds with that ticklish spice. The kitchen swaps the basmati for jasmine when the former is unavailable, but the subtleness of rice works well against the flavor of curry. Making up for that tame heat is the brashly spiced papadum, which perks up the palate with every crunchy bite. The plantains, a coarse crumb coat contrasting the soft banana-like core, offer a break from the bold flavors.
Organic Egg Salad Sandwich (those sweet potato chips are amazing!)
Vegetable and Shrimp Spring Rolls
Lighter options are also available in Kitchen 1B. The Organic Egg Salad Sandwich (P240) is a shock of almost-neon egg salad spilling out from in-between the crackly multigrain sour bread. Arugula in between gives the dish a bit of pep. The Vegetable and Shrimp Spring Rolls (P290) is crunchy, varied, and addictive, with a sweet apricot ginger sauce.
Blueberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake
Most of the desserts are sourced from Carmen's Best and New Zealand Natural Ice Cream, but Kitchen 1B does a few of their own, with more innovations. Ricotta, for example, cuts down the richness of their Blueberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake (P290). The crust is a heavenly digestive biscuit that it seems almost unfair that it was relegated to a supporting role.
Apartment 1B will probably remain as the favorite sibling, but it's always good to take the healthier turn-sometimes.
