(SPOT.ph) If you enjoy spooning ice cream into pan de sal, then Sweet Degrees just might be your thing. This new dessert stop at the F7 Pop-Up along Scout Rallos in Quezon City is serving up sweet treats—both hot and cold, hence the name—in the form of ice cream and coffee. It's the brainchild of Kat Eusebio, Jhanette Co, and Kristel Zapata, all UP Diliman Business Administration graduates who juggle managing the place along with their day jobs.

Anybody with a hankering for Carmen’s Best ice cream will love Sweet Degrees; a scoop goes for P110, and two scoops cost P190. Sweet Degrees carries all of the brand's 20 flavors and even sells them by the pint. “We want to make Carmen’s Best available to people in the area, because there aren’t any nearby places that sell the brand,” says Kat. For more basic flavors, like chocolate, vanilla, and coffee, Sweet Degrees uses Arce Dairy ice cream.

If you're looking for something "hot," Sweet Degrees offers sweet coffee concoctions, such as Caramel Latte (P120) and Mocha Latte (P120), made with coffee beans sourced from Bukidnon. The owners went local to help farmers in the country. Try the affogato if you're hot and you're cold.

These are all but a simple introduction to what Sweet Degrees is actually about. You come to this neck of the woods for one particular thing: Ice Cream Baos (P120/Premium Frost, P80/Arctic Classics). They're desserts inspired by the ones in Little Bao in Hong Kong. Little Bao is a famous "hamburger" joint that uses mantou instead of the usual burger bun or brioche. Their desserts are, of course, ice cream sandwiches.

 

Sampling which ice cream flavors go best with warm, toasted mantou buns was a delicious experiment for the trio. After that "sacrifice," five flavors were especially chosen: Sea Salt Caramel, Fudge Brownie Caramel, Strawberry Cream, Brown Butter Almond Brittle, and Green Tea Almond. That selection, however, could expand if they could find more flavors that go well with the bun.

As far as ice cream sandwiches go, this one is a comprehensive treat. The final result is an incredible marriage of creamy and crunchy textures. Let the ice cream melt ever so slightly so the flavor can soak through the mantou. Eat fast though; you don't want to make a mess. These Ice Cream Baos aren't quite suited for on-the-go eating, so Sweet Degrees came up with a classic and convenient two-piece option of crunchy mantou with condensed milk (P65).

 

This little sweet spot puts together seemingly unusual combinations that people already love. Up next on their agenda? French fries with ice cream. Now doesn't that sound exciting?
