The Best Steak Restaurants in San Juan and Pasig
We went on a steak-out.
(SPOT.ph) With a slew of noteworthy restaurants that have rapidly increased over the years, San Juan and Pasig are now on top of the list when it comes to dining out. These cities, which include popular lifestyle destinations like Kapitolyo, Greenhills, and a portion of Ortigas, are also home to some of the best steak houses in Metro Manila. We dug deep and listed down tried-and-tested steak joints in San Juan and Pasig, from the neighborhood institutions that have been around since you were young, all the way to fancy places that are worthy of celebrating your next milestone in.
If you’re looking for an intimate place minus the big dinner crowd, this one’s for you. Cowrie Grill is an elegant steak house at Promenade that serves perfectly cooked steak in huge portions, just like the original outlet at the legendary Manila Hotel. One of their signature dishes is the 390-gram Chateaubriand U.S. Angus steak, a thick-cut slice which comes from the tenderloin filet. Each bite melts like butter in your mouth and oozes with the beef’s natural, savory juices. Don’t forget to order a glass of red wine to complete the sensory experience.
Cowrie Grill is at G/F Promenade, Greenhills Shopping Center, Greenhills, San Juan City.
House of Wagyu Stone Grill
Classic never really goes out of style at House of Wagyu Stone Grill. The restaurant has been through it all, from the country’s lifting of the decade-long ban on Japanese beef to Manila’s whirlwind obsession with Wagyu (remember when the gyu kushi was all over blogs and social media?). The steak house boasts a wide selection of premium Wagyu cuts, which reaches up to Grade 10. You’re in for a treat when you order the Tenderloin Grade 8 with Foie Gras, a rich slice of perfectly marbled, adequately seasoned steak topped with a decadent portion of foie gras, and served on a scorching stone platter. If the sound of that doesn’t make your mouth water, we don’t know what will.
House of Wagyu Stone Grill is at McKinley Arcade, Ortigas Avenue corner Club Filipino Road, Greenhills, San Juan City.
Sometimes, all you need is a straightforward menu. Previously known as Highlands Prime Steakhouse, it rebranded itself to cater to a broader and younger market. Highlands Bistro has added more dishes to the menu but retains their concise steak list. Choose from three cuts—rib eye, prime rib, tenderloin—and have your steak cooked to your preferred doneness. The Classic Prime U.S. Rib Eye is 20 ounces of pure, meaty goodness, served with creamy gratin potatoes and corn fritters. Like most old-school steak places, they offer six sauces on the side, including a tangy Lemon Butter, Hollandaise, and Black Peppercorn, to name a few.
Highlands Bistro is at G/F Estancia Mall, Capitol Commons, Pasig City.
This household name is another go-to for steak aficionados who happen to find themselves with a craving in the middle of a shopping expedition. A crowd favorite is the luscious 450-gram USDA Angus Rib Eye, which is an excellent pick if you’re into sharing, but we won’t judge if you plan to scarf down the whole thing by yourself. It comes with your grade of choice, aside from a delicious side dish, of course.
Tender Bob’s is at G/F Promenade, Greenhills Shopping Center, Greenhills, San Juan City.
SGS House of Minis
This is the only remaining sit-down SGS House of Minis left in the Metro (their outlet in Glorietta is located inside a food court). Loyal patrons were heartbroken when their C-5 branch shut down for good, but don’t sulk because it looks like this one is here to stay. Many grew up loving this nostalgic casual joint that’s popular for their steaks served on a sizzling plate—once dished out, the real show begins. Waiters pour a peppery gravy mix on the hot platter, creating a big cloud of glorious, aromatic smoke. The quasi-theatrics are already an experience on their own—one that you definitely shouldn’t miss, apart from their juicy steaks.
SGS House of Minis is at LG/F Shoppesville, Greenhills, San Juan City.
Hai Chix & Steaks
Prepare to drop some money at Hai Chix & Steaks. It’s all worth it, nevertheless, with their succulent steaks that are sure to keep you daydreaming for days. Their third branch in Makati is a hit, much like their Greenhills and Pasig shops, which have been standing strong amid the influx of newer restaurants in the city. Sample their most-prized entrée, the perfectly charred U.S. Angus Porterhouse, which can feed up to three hungry adults—this is a bare-bones classic, an essential order if you’re dining with a group.
Hai Chix & Steaks has branches at 2/F 6 Missouri Street, Greenhills, San Juan City; and G/F Techno Point Building, Julia Vargas Avenue, Pasig City.
Although 22 Prime is technically a hotel food outlet, we couldn't help but give this restaurant a special mention. Nestled in the 22nd floor of Discovery Suites, it is easily a great choice for steak in the area, with their wide selection of U.S. Prime Angus steak cuts. Their consistent, top-notch service rounds out the experience nicely. The Prime's Tomahawk is a sublime, smoky slab of USDA prime Angus bone-in rib eye that's charred in all the right places. Served with grilled mushrooms and asparagus, tomato parmesan, truffle potato gratin, and their signature sauces, this is one meal you'll have a hard time forgetting.
22 Prime is at 22/F Discovery Suites, 25 ADB Avenue, Ortigas, Pasig City.
