You Only Need Four Ingredients to Make Homemade Ice Cream

No special equipment needed; just a mason jar!

( You’ve probably been baking a ton, but why not try a cooler dessert this time around—like ice cream? Even if you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can totally make it at home using this recipe from The New York Times if you have a mason jar. For the basic recipe, you need just four ingredients: cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. It does require a bit of physical activity, but what better way to burn a few calories before you enjoy your treat?

This video uses a recipe with slightly different proportions, but a similar method.

To make it, simply put one cup of heavy cream, one-and-a-half tablespoons of sugar, one-and-a-half teaspoons of vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt in a mason jar. Screw the lid tightly, then shake away! You’ll want to shake vigorously for about five minutes, or until the cream thickens (according to The New York Times, it should be “about the consistency of brownie batter”) and almost doubles in volume. Freeze it for at least three hours, then enjoy your ice cream!

The beauty of this basic recipe is in its versatility. Feel free to experiment with other flavor extracts, like almond or even ube. For a chocolate-peanut butter variation, the Times suggests adding a teaspoon of peanut butter and/or a teaspoon of chocolate syrup. You can also give it a fruity twist by pureeing half a cup of your fruit of choice—we recommend mangoes or berries—and folding it into the mixture before you freeze it. Feel free to add toppings before serving it, too—try your favorite syrups, or even cookie cereal!
