(SPOT.ph) If you've resolved to eat less or no meat in the future—whether for ethical, environmental, or health-related reasons (or just because!)—you may have found yourself struggling to stick with your resolution when the hankering for crispy-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside fried chicken hits. Hey, you're only human, after all—it's truly irresistable stuff! Here's some good news, though: you might soon be able to sate the craving without having to turn to meat. Cargill Philippines—the company that supplies chicken to Jollibee—has expressed their desire to tap into the plant-based, meat-free market soon.
Jollibee Chickenjoy supplier Cargill might also have a meatless chicken
"These alternative proteins gives us consumers healthy choices... and these types of developments for alternative proteins... and innovations are things that excite Cargill as a food company," said Cargill Philippines' President Sonny Catacutan in an interview with ANC's Market Edge on January 14. Catacutan says Cargill has "participation in plant-based protein somewhere in the world"—but not yet in the Philippines. "But yes, definitely this is an interesting space."
As for when it'll happen? "I think there’s already an ongoing discussion and interest because of our participation somewhere else," said Catacutan in the same interview. "But as for the date... that’s still in the works." Still, our fingers are crossed (#manifestating) that this takes place very soon!
UPDATE (January 15, 6:16 p.m.): Jollibee has reached out to clarify that Cargill’s plans are independent from their partnership with Jollibee. The article has been updated to reflect that.
