Theater for Kids: Shows to Watch for the Young and Young at Heart This Christmas Season

Watch the little ones fall in love with theater

( Kids, aside from being cute, are rather impressionable young humans. Raising them right is favorable to everyone, so take a page from Kurt Vonnegut and introduce them to the magic of art. We’re listing shows that’ll help you convince the young ones that theater is cool...because, duh, it is.

When: Ongoing until December 14, 2014 | Where: Onstage Theater (Greenbelt 1)

Magical is how we described the experience of seeing Pinocchio on stage when it opened in August and our opinion hasn’t changed. Watch the enthralling rendition of "A Real Little Boy" and more in this spellbinding adaptation.

Wally Watthead and His Lost Glow
When: November 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23  | Where: PETA Theater

Make room for a quirky story brought to life by practical effects...well, glitters, bubbles, and prestidigitation. This quirky Finnish play tells the tale of Wally Watthead, a nightstand lamp who embarks on a quest to retrieve his glow (as the title strongly suggests). Magician Janne Raudaskoski puts his talent in performing sleight of hand tricks to amuse anyone between age four and 40.

Christmas with A Christmas Carol? Preposterous. This time, the lovable crank Ebenezer Scrooge will be brought to life by Miguel Faustmann and Chinggoy Alonso, directed by Baby Barredo for a special holiday treat for the entire family. Say hello and sing a carol with the three ghosts of Christmas.

Alice Reyes’ Cinderella

When: November 28 to 30 and December 5 to 7 | Where: CCP Main Theater (Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo)

It’s specifically choreographed to entertain children (by no less than a National Artist), but Cinderella is for everyone with a taste for dance and romance. The fifth restaging boasts of a grand set design by Salvador Bernal and the welcoming faces of Denise Parungao and Monica Gana. It’s hard to say no to a guaranteed good time and with a classic like Cinderella, the happy ending is inescapable.

Disney on Ice

When: December 25, 2014 to January 4, 2015 | Where: Smart Araneta Coliseum

Inspire an even younger generation of Michael Christian Martinezes! This family event is a staple for some and this year, the Princesses are taking over. Watch Rapunzel, Tiana, Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, Aurora, Belle, and Snow White glide through Queen Elsa’s element. Trust us, kids love this.

Shrek the Musical
When: December 26, 2014 to January 4, 2015 | Where: Meralco Theater

After a successful run in September, Shrek returns to bring more fun to more people. You must keep in mind that before it became a redundant franchise, the story of an ogre who accidentally found love was an inspired subversion of fairy tales. Think of all the good things about the first add more singing and dancing.

Tickets available at TicketWorld.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

When: January 11 to 25, 2015 | Where: CCP Main Theater (Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo)

You can’t go wrong with a tale as old as time (and now you’re singing it). Remember how fun it was watching a singing candelabra? Sure, some people have criticized it for maybe glorifying Stockholm Syndrome, but you’re going to be there to guide the kids. Focus on the good stuff, like not judging people based on how hairy they are. Tell them to be patient with grumpy creatures with fangs. Most importantly, point out the fact that Belle loves books.
