John Lloyd Cruz loves going to the Nail Spa, buying shoes for Shaina, arranging flowers
The Greenwich endorser on being in touch with his feminine side, resolving LQs with Shaina, going topless and more.
At 27, John Lloyd Cruz is an award-winning actor, a three-time box office king, a charismatic host, and a coveted endorser. What else could he possibly want to be? Once he has a house in Tagaytay where he can grow his own garden, he wants to become a florist, the actor tells SPOT.ph. Perhaps, in the meantime, he can take on the newfound talent he discovered in London: a knack for shopping for his girlfriend, actress Shaina Magdayao.
At the launch of the new Greenwich branch in Trinoma, Cruz reveals he’s in touch with his feminine side, how he resolves LQs with Shaina Magdayao, his nail spa fixation and what he thinks of his new movie My Amnesia Girl.
John Lloyd Cruz on My Amnesia Girl
How does it feel to have the audience at the premiere screening of My Amnesia Girl immediately clamoring for a sequel?
I think first time kong na-experience ’yon. Siyempre, bukod sa refreshing, it’s really exciting na hingan ka ng part two. But the pressure that goes along with it is really high. Premiere pa lang ’yon eh; hindi mo alam how the movie is going to do sa box office. Kasi most of the people in the premiere showing are fans so hindi ko alam kung ano ’yong magiging reaction of the general public. After the first day, it’s doing very well naman. Siguro I’ll give it a couple of weeks more.
How did you prepare for your topless scene in the movie?
With me, hindi naman siya issue kasi--not that I have a good body to show--’yong character in the story hindi naman niya dine-demand na maganda, perfect, may six-pack ’yong katawan. Hindi naman ni-re-require na gano’n. I don’t know, hindi ko lang issue ’yong katawan. I mean, kung kailangang maganda ’yong katawan ko at hinihingi ng script ’yon, and nagpakita ako ng hindi match sa hinihingi ng script then I’d feel bad for myself. I’d feel humiliated. Wala, para sa’kin kung anong hinihingi ng direk, ng script, I’ll give it.
How do you stay fit? Do you have a special diet?
I don’t follow any diet really kasi ’yong workload ko is crazy. So parang part ng therapy ko is eating. Kasi ’yong time talaga is really a luxury for me especially when I was doing the movie and kasabay nun ’yong teleserye. You can just imagine kung ga’no ka-toxic ’yong schedule ko. If I don’t get to eat pa what I want to eat, mababaliw naman yata ako.
What character would you never play?
Every character is a journey for me. Nagva-vary lang sila sa kung ga’no ka-exciting ’yong character. You don’t want to take a boring journey. So if it’s a character that can really stimulate your brain, your body and your entire being as an actor, then you’d definitely go for it.
Do you plan on trying other forms of art?
I really want to explore flower arrangement. I want to be a florist. Siguro ’pag meron na akong bahay sa Tagaytay and I can maintain my own garden or something. Gusto ko ’yong flowers eh; I like the idea of giving flowers... ’Pag sinabi mong florist parang madaling ma-associate sa parang being gay or feminine. But you know in Italy, maraming, like, real men na ang galing mag-arrange ng flowers. It’s an art for me pero more like an outlet lang.
John Lloyd Cruz on shopping for girlfriend Shaina Magdayao
In an interview with The Buzz, you said that one of your favorite things to do is to shop for your girlfriend, Shaina Magdayao.
After I got home from London, binigay ko sa kanya ’yong mga gifts ko and then I realized na kaya ko siyang ipag-shopping. Parang kaya kong maging personal shopper niya. Sabi ko nga, "So puwede na? Puwede mo na akong pagkatiwalaan ’pag meron kang ipapabili?" Sabi niya, "Yeah."
What are some of the things you bought for her?
I bought her a few pairs of shoes. These are pairs na hindi common. It’s hard to say; parang I have to bring the shoes in front of you. Pero somehow nagre-reflect ’yong taste ko do’n sa binibili ko for her. ’Yong binibili ko for her has to be something I’d also like. Parang if I were a girl, I’d wear it.
How do you and Shaina resolve lovers’ quarrels?
Wala namang... You know what, sa hirap ng schedule namin and we rarely get together, parang that’s the last thing you’d want (to do during) the little time you have for each other. You don’t want to waste it pa on things like petty fights. Ako lagi kong sinasabi I’m like a girl. ’Pag I’m in a relationship, I get to enjoy things that girls enjoy. I like doing the groceries and going to the spas. Favorite ko ’yong mga nail spa. I haven’t gone to nail spas lately because I’ve been working. Pero dati, talagang grabe.
Which nail spas do you frequent?
Actually pinakagusto ko ’yong Nail Spa ni Pauline Juan sa Shangri-la. Maganda ’yong kanila eh. Very clean, mabango. I also like the ones in Eastwood.
What do you enjoy doing during your free time?
I like shopping, going to the malls and watching movies. Since pinakamalapit sa house ko ’yong Eastwood, ’yon na ’yong pinaka-convenient for me if I’m going to watch a movie lang. Sobrang convenient nung parking. From the parking, one level up nasa cinema ka na. For konting shopping, Shangri-la.
John Lloyd Cruz loves Greenwich’ Top That Buffalo Chicken and Onion Rings Pizza, and Lasagna Supreme.
Where do you like to eat out?
There are a lot of restaurants in Manila na hindi alam ng maraming tao. May mga hindi pa ako napupuntahan. There’s a private Japanese kitchen in Makati called Taka. ’Di ko pa nata-try but I’m looking forward to trying it soon. I like dining out eh. Dati nga nagpunta pa kami ng Cebu just to try a restaurant.
What do you think are the best places for a date?
Well, adventure date na naiisip ko ngayon would be a road trip. I want to explore the north from Baguio to Sagada, back to Baguio then Ilocos.
John Lloyd Cruz on his relationship with Shaina Magdayao
Can you describe each of the women that have been linked to you in one word?
There’s only one thing I can say about that. Any guy for that matter I guess, it’s not right to assume they (women) would appreciate the idea of you still talking about them. I’d rather not para sure, para safe because baka hindi nila gusto ’yong idea na nagsasalita ka pa or may sinasabi ka pa, maganda man o hindi about them. So ayoko na lang magsalita.
You said your ideal marrying age is 33. How do you envision yourself at that point in terms of your career and family life?
Ideally lang, hindi ko naman gano’n kaplanado ’yong life ko. When people ask me what age I plan to settle down, I usually say 33. Pero peg lang ’yon. You ask me about something I want to happen or do in the next year or two, truth is, hindi ko alam. I live by the day. But I make sure I have the right investments--well that’s a different issue. Pero in terms of marriage and career, I don’t really plan them.
