(SPOT.ph) Award-winning Filipino filmmaker Peque Gallaga has died at the age of 76 today, May 7. According to an Inquirer.net report published on May 5, the actor-director-screenwriter was in the hospital "due to complications from his past health conditions." Gallaga's family appealed to fans to keep the matter a private affair, according to a Facebook post from fellow director Lore Reyes.
SunStar Bacolod News was the first to report Gallaga's passing.
In honor of Gallaga's legacy, we look back at five of his most memorable films:
Oro, Plata, Mata (1982)
Scorpio Nights (1985)
Batang X (1995)
Magic Temple (1996)
Of these, the most notable is Oro Plata Mata, which was based on a screenplay by Jose Javier Reyes. It is set in Negros and follows the story of two families as they live through World War II. It won the Gawad Urian award in 1982 for best picture and best direction, among others, and is considered a landmark Filipino film that every cinephile should see.
Oro Plata Mata was one of the classic Filipino films recently restored through the efforts of the ABS-CBN Film Archives.
