5 Things That Prove Pinoys Really Love Music

Karaoke, anyone?

When it comes to music, it's hard to beat us Pinoys, who are known worldwide for being some of the best singers in the world. And we’re proud to say that we’ve done well to live up to this daunting expectation, showcasing countless times that our musical talents are truly world-class. Not to say that every Pinoy out there has the voice of an angel or anything; in fact, for many, it’s the farthest thing from the truth. Despite this, making music is such an important part of our culture and heritage that we’d gamely warble our way through corny ballads every chance we get. Here are five things that prove just how much we love music:

We really love karaoke
Karaoke systems are as ubiquitous in the Philippines as tanned skin and black hair. You can find them everywherein practically every Filipino household, watering hole, bar, and restaurant out there. We even have places specifically designed to meet all our videoke needs!

We’re not shy about showing off our talents in public
Stay in a mall long enough, and sooner or later, you’ll be treated to an impromptu concert care of the salespeople selling videoke systems. Sometimes, the singing will be done by an exceptionally talented (and exceptionally game) mallgoer.

We expect our celebrities to be triple threats
Even when they’ve shown absolutely no hint of musical ability, famous TV and film personalities still make an effort to dance, sing, and regularly participate in the country’s famous variety shows. The adoring crowds will cheer them on even when they’re completely out of tune.

We like to spontaneously burst into song
Sometimes it’s because a certain song starts playing in the jeepney, or because it’s an inuman session and drunkenly crooning out a tune sounds like a great idea, or even just because you’re bored AF while stuck in line for the train. The best part? Usually all it takes is one person to start singing before others join in.

We make music no matter the occasion
Seemingly no festival, fiesta, company party or school program is complete without a musical number. In fact, in the Philippines, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an occasion where a rousing round of music would be unwelcome. Even funeral receptions and typhoons are not exempt from the list.

We Pinoys hold music close to our hearts. We live our lives constantly surrounded by it, and our days feel incomplete if we don’t hear someone’s soulful rendition of a certain popular 60’s ballad in the far off distance.
