The SPOT.ph Guide to the 22nd French Film Festival

Choose from a dozen French films and more starting this weekend!

 

(SPOT.ph) It's that time of the year again, movie fans! Clear your calendars from June 9 to 17 for the highly anticipated French Film Festival. Now on its 22nd edition, the festival will be screening 12 films that give audiences a glimpse into French culture, values, and way of life.

 

On June 12, the festival is paying homage to Filipino films that have been screened at the Cannes Film Festival over the years: 2016's Ma' Rosa, 2013's On The Job, 2017's Nakaw, and 2000's Anino.

 

Screenings for all films are happening at Greenbelt 3 in Makati City and Cinema Square in Bonifacio High Street. Here is the complete list of French films that you can watch this year.

 

 

Bastille Day (2016)

Directed by: James Watkins

Stars: Idris Elba, Richard Madden, and Charlotte Le Bon

 

Game of Thrones alum Richard Madden plays Michael Mason, an American pickpocket living in Paris. He finds himself on top of the CIA's wanted list after he is accidentally involved in a bombing. The CIA's field agent, Sean Briar (Idris Elba), recruits him to uncover what he suspects is a bigger conspiracy.

Géronimo (2014)

Directed by: Tony Gatlif

Stars: Céline Sallette, Rachid Yous, and David Murgia

 

Set in the scenic south of France, a young teacher named Geronimo tries to ease tensions between the kids of the local neighborhood. Everything changes when a teenage Turkish girl named Nil Terzi flees from an arranged marriage to be with her gypsy lover, Lucky Molina. Their little tryst sparks hostilities between the two clans, and Geronimo struggles to quell the ensuing unrest around her.

Le Dernier diamant (2014)

Simon, a thief released on parole, decides to take on the biggest job of his life: stealing the "Florentin," a priceless, mythical diamond being auctioned by its owners. To succeed, he must convince Julia, a diamond expert, to help him with the heist.

L’Ombre des femmes (2015)

Pierre (Stanislas Merhar) and Manon (Clotilde Courau) are documentary filmmakers who make a living by doing odd jobs. When Pierre meets a young intern named Elisabeth, she becomes his mistress. The film follows their tangled love affair that only gets further complicated when Elisabeth tells him that his wife has a lover, too.

Curiosity makes him shake off his indifference and he decides to intervene.

Les Chevaliers blancs (2016)

The head of an NGO named Jacques Arnault plans a major operation to help 300 orphaned victims of the Chadian civil war and bring them to French adoption applicants. Completely immersed in the brutal reality of a country at war, the NGO members start losing their convictions and are faced with the limits of humanitarian intervention.

Following a violent dispute, a 20-year-old rapper is forced to leave Paris. He becomes the driver to his producer's father as the latter goes on a tour around France, following in the footsteps of the painter Joseph Vernet. Despite their generation gap and cultural differences, an improbable friendship develops between the promising rapper and an everyday builder from Northern France.

Nocturama (2016)

It's one random morning in Paris. A group of young people from all walks of life are seen taking the metro tunnels and the city's streets, seemingly going about their day. Then it's clear that their movements are precise, even dangerous. They converge towards the same point, a department store, just when it is about to shut. Night falls, and the terror begins.

Based on the French classic novels by the Countess of Segur, it tells the story of a playful little girl named Sophie, whose boundless curiosity often gives her chateau-dwelling mother a headache. The whimsical adaptation isn't just for kids; it has its fair share of underlying dark themes, too.
