Will This New Instagram App Be Your Next Streaming Go-To?

Say hello to IGTV.

(SPOT.ph) There's little to no doubt that Instagram has been one of the go-to apps—if not the go-to app—for everyone who wants some quality content. You've got #aesthetic photos, quirky videos, videos of someone's day (a.k.a. Stories), and even livestream content you can watch as it happens. Now, they're adding more to their platform by launching IGTV, a whole new app where users can upload longform videos—which can be up to one hour long. (In case you don't know, Instagram videos posted on a user's main feed are limited to 60 seconds while videos posted on Instagram Stories are only up to 15 seconds.)

Though it's an app on its own, IGTV will also be accessible through a button on the Instagram app on the upper-right side, right beside the button for your direct messages. The videos uploaded on IGTV will be in a vertical format and in full screen. "It's built for how you actually use your phone," Instagram's CEO Kevin Systrom says in an announcement.

When you open the app, the videos from the people you follow will start playing automatically, so you won't have to look for new content to watch. And if you want to find out who else you can watch, you just have to swipe up. You'll be able to choose videos under the categories, "For You," "Following," "Popular," and "Continue Watching."

And if you're wondering about the name IGTV, it's because the creators who make videos are the "channels" on the platform. While anyone can be a creator by uploading videos on the app or on the web, there are some big names that are already set to have channels. They include Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian-West, and Kevin Hart.

While there haven't been any announcements about it yet, the feature of one-hour long videos on IGTV makes it a possible platform for being streaming service. That means you might just have an original series produced by your favorite social-media platform or even have reruns of old shows on it, too.

IGTV is set to roll out globally in the next few weeks on iOS and Android.
