Pinoy Musicians Pay Tribute to Music Legend Pepe Smith
Rest in peace, Pepe Smith.
(SPOT.ph) Pepe Smith, one of the icons of Pinoy rock, passed away today, January 28, as confirmed by his daughter Daisy. In a Facebook post, she says, "Thank you for everything papa bear ko. Thank you for being the best dad in the world. I know you're in the best place now, no more pains, papa...I will see you in [a] few days. I love you to the moon and back."
As a member and guitarist of Juan Dela Cruz Band along with Wally Gonzalez and Mike Hanopol, Smith helmed the sound of Pinoy rock with their album and titular track, "Himig Natin." Pinoy musicians, who have been influenced by Smith and gotten to perform with the music legend himself, are paying tribute to Smith online.
Eraserheads' and Sandwich's Raymund Marasigan posted two tweets about the musician and posted a video dedicated to him on Instagram.
The Itchyworms as a band posted a photo of them sharing a meal with Smith.
The Itchyworms vocalist Jugs Jugueta also posted a video of the band singing "Panahon" with Smith. On Instagram, he also says, "Pagtanda ko, ipagmamayabang ko sa mga batang musikero na naging kaibigan ko yung nag-umpisa ng lahat...['yong] King of Pinoy Rock."
The Itchyworms guitarist Chino Singson also posted his own tribute to his fellow guitarist.
Singer-songwriter Nicole Asensio shares her thoughts about Smith, saying, "Thank you for the music, thank you for the good vibes. Thank you for paving the way for the rest of us 'misfits' who just wanna rock n make people feel. You’re a legend." She also laments the death of Razorback drummer Brian Velasco, who passed away on January 16. "Oh, rock n' roll. Whats happening? Two great losses days apart. January 2019, I wanna love you but you’re making it difficult. Please. No more heartbreaks?"
More musicians expressed their condolences online, such as Jim Paredes, Callalily's vocalist Kean Cipriano, and Sandwich bassist Myrene Academia.
