Filming for Darna Has Officially Started

Director Jerrold Tarog gave a sneak peek!

(SPOT.ph) Darna, the popular Filipino comic book by Mars Ravelo, is an easily recognizable figure in Filipino culture. Just by swallowing a stone, a young girl named Narda transforms into the titular heroine and saves the day. You've probably seen the character in comic books or on television, but a film has been in the works since 2015. Set to play the heroine is newcomer Jane De Leon. Most of the details are under wraps, but director Jerrold Tarog recently took to Instagram to tell folks that filming has officially started.

Tarog captioned his Instagram post with "Day 1," and you can immediately see the Darna Funko Pop front and center, with the production crew blurred in the background.

The role of Darna originally belonged to Angel Locsin, who has played the heroine before on television. Due to health reasons, the actress backed out of the project. Liza Soberano then stepped in to play the character, but encountered a grave finger injury while filming, and decided to step away from the project as well. In 2018, director Erik Matti decided to let go of the project due to creative differences. Days after, Tarog was announced as the new director of the project.
