10 TV and Movie Couples We Want to Happen IRL
Hey, we can dream, right?
(SPOT.ph) It's easy to root for your favorite love team, especially when they always play characters who are constantly torn apart by circumstances (read: kontrabidas). It's so easy, in fact, that fans easily forget that it's not real. After all, you know a tandem has legit chemistry when legions of fans get emotionally invested and they begin to root for a real relationship behind the cameras. From the '80s to today, here are some examples of duos who made us swoon and fall in love with their tandems...even when the cameras aren't rolling.
Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza
Sample chemistry: Every interview, KalyeSerye episode, and magazine cover you can think of. On a grander scale, they've racked up over 20 endorsement deals in a span of just five months—that's how credible their tandem is...even to big businesses.
Why they would work in real life: The chemistry between Alden and Maine was palpable from the moment Eat Bulaga put them together by chance. (Ask any AlDub fan and they'll agree!) There's just something so likeable about Alden's gentleman ways and Maine's down-to-earth personality...so much so that they are often asked if they are ever getting together. Their latest answer? They're both single and open to being in a relationship in the future. More specifically, Maine says, "Sa amin na lang po 'yon...Kinikilala pa lang po namin ang isa’t-isa. And right now po, very good friends po kami." Sa tamang panahon, then?

Ian Veneracion and Jodi Sta. Maria
Sample chemistry: Ian and Jodi play opposite each other as Eduardo Buenavista and Amor Powers in ABS-CBN's remake of Pangako Sa 'Yo. They are also set to star in Antoinette Jadaone's MMFF ensemble rom-com, All You Need is Pag-Ibig.
Why they would work in real life: You know a love team works when everyone suddenly forgets Jodi's previous and equally massive tandem with Richard Yap. It's safe to say that these two are the driving force behind PSY's current success, with viewers religiously tuning in to catch the fated love story of Eduardo and Amor. Jodi, who has christened their love team as a "partnership," admits that they enjoy working together. Of course, Ian is a happily married man and doting dad, but even he understands their appeal, saying. "Another reason why people enjoy seeing us together is because they know who we are in real life—I am married and have a family—so parang merong sexual tension; merong forbidden love so baka 'yon."

Bobby Andrews and Angelu de Leon
Sample chemistry: The onscreen magic of Peachy and Wacks went well beyond their teen show. We watched these two hook up on TV shows like T.G.I.S., Growing Up, and Ikaw Na Sana, as well as movies like T.G.I.S: The Movie (1997), Laging Naroon Ka (1997), and Ikaw Na Sana: The Movie (1998).
Why they would work in real life: Back in the '90s. these two held their own against powerhouses like Jolina and Marvin or Judy Ann and Wowie...which says quite a lot about them. Their chemistry was undeniable, even behind-the-scenes, which had fans everywhere speculating on the possibility of a real-life romance. For the record, they never actually took it to the next level, but Bobby recently admitted to PEP.ph that he would have courted Angelu, but he held back because she was only 17 at the time and her mother was pretty strict. Plus, they stayed good friends even after all these years. Good enough for us!
William Martinez and Maricel Soriano
Sample chemistry: Oh My Mama (1981), Galawgaw at Pabling (1982). Hindi Kita Malimot (1983), and Summer Love (1983)
Why they would work in real life: These two prove that you don’t need cruel parents or scheming mistresses to make a love team click. William and Maricel made plenty of audiences laugh and swoon throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, and their seemingly endless projects together racked up box-office gold and critical recognition for Regal Entertainment. They later reunited in 2008 for the ABS-CBN show Florinda, and the effortless rapport was still there, which only tells us the shelf life for these two could surpass many real-life relationships.
Coco Martin and Julia Montes
Sample chemistry: 2012’s telenovela mega-hit Walang Hanggan, followed by another monster hit in Ikaw Lamang, and a 2013 romance film, A Moment in Time
Why they would work in real life: These two are incredibly talented actors but when put together, their compatibility is off the charts. There’s just something about this love team that makes you want to root for them, no matter the context of the story. Despite eventually working in separate projects, their offscreen closeness still has tongues wagging, even to this day. In fact, Coco himself said that the “very special” Julia is “girlfriend material.”
Aga Muhlach and Lea Salonga
Sample chemistry: They only had two projects together, with the most notable one being Sana Maulit Muli in 1995. Aga might have been paired with plenty of leading ladies through the years, but it’s his tandem with Lea that really stays memorable.
Why they would work in real life: We love a relationship built on friendship and these two have it in spades. They both went their separate ways career-wise after the 1995 hit film, but that didn’t stop them from staying friends and supporting each other's work through the years. Fans have requesting for a reunion for years, which they’ve always been open to but never got around to doing...until recently, when they both announced plans to star in a new movie come 2016. Heck, even Aga’s wife, Charlene Gonzales, admits that she loves their chemistry and she’s stoked for their reunion project. We feel you!
Paulo Avelino and Maja Salvador
Sample chemistry: The ensemble comedy Status: It’s Complicated (2013) and the 2015 teleserye, Bridges of Love. They’re also slated to work together in an untitled project next year.
Why they would work in real life: You mean other than the obvious fact that they look really, really good together? Audiences quickly latched onto their pairing, despite the fact that Paulo’s character was initially the villain on the show. They played up their love team in interviews and duets, but you can just tell these two have something off-camera, too. In an interview with Vice Ganda, their co-star Jericho Rosales even admitted that he sometimes felt left out when Paulo and Maja were in the same room together.
Derek Ramsay and Jennylyn Mercado
Sample chemistry: The 2014 MMFF runaway hit, English Only, Please
Why they would work in real life: On one hand, you’ve got Derek’s bad-boy charm and Jennylyn’s hot-but-kooky appeal, which translates really well even off camera. On the other hand, if these two ever get together in real life, they will single-handedly give everyone celebrity couple #FitnessGoals. Maybe even #ParentingGoals, since they’re both single parents? In an interview back in September, Jennylyn revealed that Derek was her favorite leading man out of everyone she has worked with because "Iba talaga eh, since day one." She also shared that they both remain in touch and that they will be working on a sequel to their movie.
Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano
Sample chemistry: They held their own even in supporting roles in 2013’s She’s the One, followed by the hugely successful show, Forevermore, and box-office hits Just The Way You Are and Everyday I Love You (both in 2015).
Why they would work in real life: Put together Enrique’s “cocky but secretly sweet” persona and Liza’s gorgeous and wholesome image, and you’ve got a winning formula that has worked since...well, forever. Fans don’t have to speculate about the possibility of a real-life romance either, because Enrique has been pretty open about waiting for Liza to turn 18. Swoon!
James Reid and Nadine Lustre
Sample chemistry: Diary ng Panget (2014), Talk Back and You’re Dead (2014), Para sa Hopeless Romantic (2014), and the immensely popular series, On the Wings of Love
Why they would work in real life: Ask any of their legions of dedicated fans and they’ll probably have a looong list of reasons. We, however, can chalk it down to their individual abilities to make us laugh, and their sheer chemistry. Although they probably don’t intend to make us swoon, but just watching them being silly behind-the-scenes (and exchanging one kiss after another) is more than enough to have us rewinding every gag reel the show releases. They’ve both repeatedly insisted that they are just friends, but that hasn’t stopped JaDine fans from wanting a whole lot more.
