10 Biggest Pinoy Celebrity Hookups and Breakups of 2016
From the cutest new couples to the ones that sadly fell apart
(SPOT.ph) It's been a rollercoaster year for celebrity couples. Over in Hollywood, we have the likes of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively making us swoon, as well as Brangelina suddenly breaking our hearts. Locally, we've also had our fair share of drama. From rumored third parties to reel-to-real romances, it's been a riveting year for local showbiz. We round up 10 of the biggest local hookups and breakups of 2016.
James Reid and Nadine Lustre
Fans of this onscreen tandem rejoiced in February when James Reid publicly declared his love for Nadine Lustre during their concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. It took two years of friendship and being love team partners (plus a supposed real-life fight in November 2015) to get to a real romance; according to an interview, they officially started dating on February 11.
Luis Manzano and Jessy Mendiola
In September 2015, Jessy Mendiola was involved in a plane altercation with Enrique Gil (and several other people). Luis Manzano, who was also in the flight, came to her rescue. However, rumors of a romance only began in February 2016, when Manzano and Angel Locsin broke things off. Mendiola had denied the persistent third-party rumors, saying he courted her in May. The two attended the Star Magic Ball together; Manzano even spent the recent holidays with her family.
Marlon Stockinger and Pia Wurtzbach
After a much-publicized romance with PEOPLE Magazine's "Sexiest Doctor Alive" Mike Varshavski, Pia Wurtzbach was photographed with racecar driver Marlon Stockinger in New York. The reigning Miss Universe hasn't admitted to anything, but in October, Stockinger confirmed to ABS-CBN that they were "seeing each other."
Emilio Arambulo and Andi Eigenmann
It was back in November 2015 when actress Andi Eigenmann first hinted that she was dating a non-showbiz guy, but didn't divulge any further details. (Prior to her new relationship, she was fresh out of a messy split with Jake Ejercito, the supposed father of her daughter.) Things were kept under wraps until November 2016 when Eigenmann confirmed her relationship with Emilio Arambulo by posting a photo to celebrate their first anniversary.
Baste Duterte and Ellen Adarna
The 2016 rumor mill just won't leave these two alone. It all started in May when Ellen Adarna posted photos with Baste Duterte in Siargao where they were celebrating Beauty Gonzales' birthday. Despite constantly reiterating that they were just friends, the gossip continued. In November, a photo of them kissing went viral; Duterte's manager, Betchay Vidanes, neither confirmed nor denied anything and simply said, "[Baste] is not married and he doesn't label his relationships."
John Lloyd Cruz and Angelica Panganiban
Speculations about a breakup first popped up online in June 2015, after columnist Ricky Lo reported the big news. However, their actual split didn't happen until talent manager Ogie Diaz's announcement in January 2016. His long-time love team partner, Bea Alonzo, was first rumored to be the cause behind the breakup—mostly because they were fresh out of A Second Chance and Alonzo's own relationship had just ended—but all parties denied the allegations. The former couple was recently spotted together in Rockwell, and they've both insisted they remained friends.
Zanjoe Marudo and Bea Alonzo
Fans were heartbroken when news spread that this long-time couple had called it quits, despite reportedly trying to work things out. Rumors surfaced in December 2015, but Zanjoe Marudo only confirmed the news a month later in an emotional sit-down with Boy Abunda. Neither have disclosed details behind their split, but they stayed friends (at least according to Bea Alonzo). These days, she's been getting cozy with her ex and recent co-star, Gerald Anderson.
Timothy Tan and Sunshine Dizon
Actress Sunshine Dizon broke off her marriage with Timothy Tan in the most explosive way you could imagine. (Very Pirena of her, if you ask us.) She took to social media to publicly call out her now-estranged husband for having an affair, and even refused to file for annulment, saying, "Why would I give them the happiness to be together, 'di ba? They should pay for it." Instead, she filed a case against Tan, who issued a public apology to her and his children just before Christmas.
Gab Valenciano and Tricia Centenera
Despite a civil ceremony and two grandiose weddings, this showbiz marriage only lasted a little over a year. In a series of cryptic posts online, Gab Valenciano hinted at a split, while Tricia Centenera went straight to the point: "I don't tolerate cheaters." She confirmed the infidelity, and added that he owed Centenera and her family a lot of money. A report from PEP.ph alleged that four women were involved, including James Reid's sister, Lauren Reid, and cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfiao. (They have all since denied the reports.)
Luis Manzano and Angel Locsin
It turns out love wasn't sweeter the second time around for this celebrity couple. Two years after their initial breakup, they gave their relationship another shot. Despite persistent speculations that they were engaged, they eventually went their separate ways. Luis Manzano denied his now-girlfriend Jessy Mendiola's involvement, while Angel Locsin went on to fuel the Darna rumors. If this interview with Locsin is to be believed, their breakup was anything but amicable.
