P12B budget approved for calamity victims
The Senate has voted to approve the P12 billion supplemental budget for the emergency relief and rehabilitation efforts for the victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, reports GMANews.tv.
According to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, the fund will not be used to finance campaigns of administration candidates for the upcoming 2010 polls.
"In order to dispel any suspicion or any doubt that this money will be dissipated by those who will implement it, an amendment was accepted to create a congressional oversight with strict reporting system," Enrile said in a press conference.
The funds for the supplemental budget will come from the government shares on the Malampaya project, a natural gas project in Palawan, estimated to rake in $10 billion from its 20-year operations, starting in 2002.
