"Abstain from Facebook, texting and pork this Lent" says Pinoy priest
Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz of Lingayen-Dagupan urged Filipino Catholics to abstain from Facebook , movies, videogames, texting and eating pork, reports Yahoo! News. "All these sacrifices are a form of mortification of the flesh. It is a form of self-denial that is meant to elevate the spiritual needs over the physical," the priest said.
Cruz, a retired archbishop known for advising other Catholic bishops to use blogs in evangelism, also told ABS-CBN News that politicians need to stop political mudslinging during Lent. He recommended that instead of politicking, they should use their campaign funds to help the poor and provide social justice for oppressed Filipinos.
"We have candidates who say they are for the poor but then spend millions of pesos on their campaign ads. Where is the justice there? It's common sense that if you want to help your fellow man, you attend to his needs first before your own," he said.
The former archbishop reminded Catholics that they should spend the season contemplating the sacrifices made by Jesus Christ, and in their own ways, do the same.
