Earth Hour events: Beyond switching the lights off

As Manila and the rest of the world go black on March 27, Saturday, we shed light on the other events you can join to support Earth Hour.

Almost the whole world will be switching its lights off for Earth Hour this Saturday, March 27, the Philippines included. "Switch-off events are slated for every major city and town in the Philippines," shares Gregg Yan, Information, Education and Communications Officer, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines. Philstar reports that over 10 million Filipinos switched off their lights in 2009 and saved enough electricity that amounted to shutting down a dozen coal-fired power plants for an hour. This year, 100 countries have committed to join Earth Hour, an increase from last year’s 88.

But aside from turning to candlelight for an hour, there are more ways to pledge support for the fight against global warming and climate change. Blogging, tweeting (tag your tweets with @earthhour) and sharing the news about Earth Hour on Facebook and other social networking sites with downloadable banners and images, are just some of the ways to inspire people to take Earth Hour beyond one hour.

In Manila, get ready to join in the festivities lined up to support Earth Hour 2010:
