Archbishop Oscar Cruz wants list of bishops who accept PAGCOR donations
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz wants to know who among Catholic bishops have accepted donations from the government-owned gambling agency, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), reports PhilStar.com.
The list of PAGCOR donation recipients is confidential but Cruz, the chairman of Krusadang Bayan Laban sa Sugal, hopes to obtain the list through the passage of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill. The bill failed to be ratified due to a lack of quorum on the last day of session of the previous congress, but various groups are currently pushing for the bill’s passage, reports Inquirer.net.
If the list is made available to the public, Cruz will present it to the Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). Based on two pastoral statements of the CBCP, bishops are not allowed to receive donations from legal or illegal gambling, Cruz said in an article posted on CBCPNews.com.
"Truth knows no party. I’m sorry but I’m just saying that the truth will set us free," Cruz said. "The CBCP never claims sanctity nor sainthood but it doesn’t mean that it should also be dishonored by contradictions to their own pronouncements."
