P15 MRT fare to increase to P25?
Department of Transportation and Communications Chief Jose "Ping" de Jesus told Unang Hirit that the MRT and LRT fare hikes are inevitable after the DOTC finishes its review in August.
Though the increased MRT fee was placed at P40 by former Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s spokesperson Elena Bautista-Horn, De Jesus said the DOTC is still studying "what an equitable fare would be." However, MRT General Manager Reynaldo Berroya told ABS-CBN News that the P15 MRT fare might be raised to P20 or P25.
De Jesus told ABS-CBN News that the increase is necessary for the government to recover the over P5 billion per year subsidy it spends on the MRT. The MRT only earns about P1.8 billion a year, according to the report.
