NASA to send spacecraft to sun by 2018
NASA: "Solar Probe Plus, a new NASA mission to visit and study the sun closer than ever before, is officially underway." Video posted on Youtube on September 3.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to send a spacecraft, sans people, to the sun by 2018, reports Time.com. Part of the Solar Probe Plus mission, the spacecraft will be sent to about four miles from the sun’s surface and "will have to withstand intense radiation (and) temperatures exceeding 2,550 degrees Fahrenheit," reports Mashable.com.
Time.com reports, "The main goals are to discover why the sun’s atmosphere is hotter than its surface, and what causes ’solar winds’ that affect the rest of the solar system." The first trip to a star, the Solar Probe Plus aims to "unlock the sun’s biggest mysteries," according to Mashable.com.
