CHECK IT OUT: The Room Upstairs in LRI Plaza, Reposo
The Room Upstairs gets a revamp.
You get to choose your own dining area at The Room Upstairs.
The Room Upstairs, the three-year old furniture store and café located in the design hub LRI Plaza, has revamped their menu and their space to reflect a spot that brings together art, food and culture.
The Room Upstairs used to host occasional gigs by music acts Nyko Maca and Mozzie. These days, the café space is strictly just for dining. While the crowd never got too rowdy, owner Ari Peralta shares that they needed more space for the furniture. "Plus, there was always that chance that the furniture might get damaged," he admits. His worries are not unfounded--the modern and contemporary pieces displayed around the store are just too pretty to be sloshed with wine or beer during a gig.

Seating only a maximum of 35 people, The Room Upstairs has several tables reserved for dining. Two long tables can seat bigger groups, while smaller coffee table sets may be occupied by a group of three. The menu, albeit limited, now reflects the café's philosophy in supporting everything local. Aside from the locally-made furniture (with the exception of clocks and lamps, which are imported), the dishes are all made from organic and locally-sourced ingredients. Signature dishes---such as Vigan Longganisa in Cream Sauce (P160), Creamy Tuyo Pasta (P160), Blackened Dory Sandwich (P220)---have replaced the more generic items which you can order anywhere else. "We want people to come here because of a specific dish that only we have," says Peralta.
They serve good, strong cups of coffee (the Barako and Alamid varieties are available) and the desserts are also perfect for just lounging around and being around beautiful furniture. Currently, their patrons are mostly designers, their clients, expats and students (Alliance Francaise is just across and has an annex in LRI Plaza), but Peralta hopes more people stray from their usual dining destinations and pop in for a go-see. And if you end up liking the dining set or the chair you're sitting on, you can order the piece and purchase it for your home.
