Prince William engaged to marry Kate Middleton
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first appearance together after they got engaged.
Prince William of Wales has announced his engagement to longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, reports CNN.com. It was last month, during a vacation in Kenya, when the British prince popped the question. He gave her the sapphire and diamond ring of his mother, the late Princess Diana. "It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me, and Kate’s now very special to me, so it was only right to put the two together."
Citing the Clarence House, CNN.com reports that the wedding will be held in London in the spring or summer of 2011. "Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force."
Independent Television News interviews Prince William and Kate Middleton.
"I’d been carrying (the ring) around for three weeks before (I asked her). I literally did not let it go," William told Independent Television News. "I had been planning (to propose) for a while but as every guy will know, it takes a certain amount of motivation to get it going."
The proposal came as a "total shock" to Middleton, who is reportedly now working with her parents, millionaire entrepreneurs who run an online children’s party supplies business. She said, "We were out there with friends and things, so I really didn’t expect it at all."
Asked during a press conference why it took him so long to pop the question, William quipped, "I didn’t realize it was a race; otherwise, I would probably have been a lot quicker." He said, "The timing is right now. We’re both very happy."
The couple, both 28 years old, has been dating since 2003. They first met at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2002 as students.
