PAWS protests against upcoming dolphin show at Araneta Coliseum
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) staged a protest on December 7 against the upcoming dolphin show at Araneta Coliseum by Indofil Sea Wonders Co. Ltd. According to ABS-CBNNews.com, PAWS claimed that the chlorine in the dolphins’ pool can cause blindness, and that the dolphins are deprived of food before a show. PAWS added, in a Bandila report, that the dolphins also suffer from the rigors of traveling.
Indofil Sea Wonders told Bandila, "The water in our pool is saltwater and therefore produces only natural organic chlorine." The company, according to the report, invited PAWS to check their pool water. The latter agreed to do so.
The animal welfare group also called for the resignation of Angel Mateo, officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Animal Industry’s Animal Welfare Division. PAWS said Mateo has repeatedly issued permits to traveling dolphin shows despite the group’s four-year-old campaign against it.
