Hubert Webb, 5 others in Vizconde massacre case acquitted

The Supreme Court (SC) has acquitted Hubert Webb, son of former Senator Freddie Webb, and five others in the Vizconde massacre case on Tuesday, reports GMANews.tv. The 7-4-4 vote of the SC reversed two previous rulings that found Webb and eight others guilty of killing Estrellita Vizconde and her daughters Carmela and Jennifer almost 20 years ago. Webb was also accused of raping Carmela.

According to GMANews.tv, the five other acquitted men are Antonio Lejano, Michael Gatchalian, Miguel Rodriguez, Hospicio Fernandez and Peter Estrada. Citing SC spokesman Jose Midas Marquez, GMANews.tv said four judges inhibited themselves from deliberations: Associate Justices Antonio Carpio, Eduardo Nachura, Diosdado Peralta and Mariano del Castillo.

In January 2000, the Paranaque Regional Trial Court Branch 274 convicted Webb and eight other people guilty of killing the three members of the Vizconde family, according to GMANews.tv. About five years later, the Court of Appeals upheld the conviction. Webb then brought the case to the Supreme Court, asking for a DNA analysis on the semen sample or vaginal smears from Carmela Vizconde’s body.
