P-Noy questions Bongbong’s statement that Marcos could’ve turned PH into another Singapore, says Marcoses had the chance to uplift PH econ

President Noynoy Aquino said yesterday that the Marcoses had the chance to uplift the Philippine economy during the late Ferdinand Marcos’ time as President, reports GMA News. This was in reaction to Marcos’ son, Sen. Bongbong Marcos statement that his father could have turned the Philippines into another Singapore if he hadn’t been ousted during the 1986 People Power Revolution.

("They had the opportunity to uplift our economy. But after Marcos’ 14 years of dictatorship, from 1972 to 1986, our country was still left behind, wasn’t it?")

From around 100 million in 1974, the country’s debt ballooned to billions when the Marcoses left, Aquino said. "So, paano naman natin masasabing Singapore na tayo (So how can we say we could’ve been like Singapore)?" He added that the Philippines is still paying off the debts incurred during Marcos’ tenure.

Aquino declined to comment further, reports GMA News. "Alam niyo ang EDSA kasi ang hinahabol natin pagkakaisa tapos makikipagbangayan ako sa kanya...Sa totoo lang ho talagang ang dami ho kasing puwedeng sabihin pero parang nakakasira sa diwa ng EDSA." ("Commenting on this issue would just spoil the spirit of the EDSA revolution, which is unity. I have a lot to say but I will refrain from doing so in the spirit of EDSA.")

In response to Marcos comparing the Philippines to Singapore, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago previously said, "We cannot draw a parallel." GMA News quoted her: "Singapore is an authoritarian system just like ours (then), but the thing is that the aspect of corruption is notably absent... I don’t think they are congruent to each other."
