PH’s Antonio Lining now No. 1 pool player in the world, expected to overtake Django Bustamante
(SPOT.ph) Following the recently concluded Philippine Open Pool Championship, professional billiards player Antonio Lining has become the No. 1 pool player in the world, reports GMA News Online.
World Pool-Billiard Association President Ian Anderson said Lining is expected to overtake Francisco ’Django’ Bustamante as the world’s No. 1 player after making it to the semifinal round on the last day of the Philippine Open.
Lining, who went into the Philippine Open with a total of 1,210 points, is expected to gain at least 300 points for being a semifinalist. Bustamante, who didn’t play in the WPA event, was ahead of Lining by only 82 points, reports GMA News Online.
"First time ko ’yong maging No.1. Sayang nga lang medyo hindi tayo pinalad sa Philippine Open. Nangyayari talaga ’yong gano’ng klaseng talo," Lining said, referring to the 9-0 wipeout he suffered against Germany’s Ralf Souquet in their crossover semifinals match. ("It’s my first time to be named No. 1 in the world. It’s too bad we weren’t so fortunate in the Philippine Open.")
In 2009, Lining made it to the semifinals of the World Ten Ball Championship in Manila, according to GMA News Online. The next year, he was a semifinalist in the World 9-Ball Championship in Qatar. He also finished in the top five of the 2010 China Open and 2011 World 8-Ball.
