Anak TV calls TV5’s apology and probe into Willing Willie incident "a commendable first step," urges media to be more sensiti

(SPOT.ph) Anak TV, an advocate for child-sensitive family-friendly television, has called TV5’s public apology and decision to investigate the "Jan-Jan on Willing Willie" incident a "commendable first step."

In their statement released yesterday, the organization also pushed for the discussion of "ways that media can become more sensitive to the needs of its young viewing public, balancing entertainment value with social consciousness and responsibility."

The statement also reads: "Focusing too closely on this single incident further endangers the privacy and the reputation of the child who figured in it, and delays his return to a normal, everyday life. He does not need any more insensitivity than he has already been subjected to thus far, by repeated coverages, replays and exchanges of opinions."

Anak TV added, "Television is a powerful medium that can divide as it can unite a nation; and like a knife and a matchbook, its utility can bring either harm or good. Responsibility is therefore key."

In a letter, Anak TV said "all the TV networks and their affiliates" that belong to the organization created the statement. Anak TV members include TV5’s Christine Ona, ABS-CBN’s Evelyn Raymundo, GMA’s Felipe Gozon and spokesperson Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski.
