Robin Padilla appeals to archbishop to reconsider stand on his and wife Mariel Rodriguez’s Catholic wedding
(SPOT.ph) Action star Robin Padilla appealed to retired Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz to reconsider his position on Padilla and wife Mariel Rodriguez’s planned Catholic wedding in June, reports ABS-CBN News.
Padilla is Muslim while Rodriguez is Catholic. Last week, Cruz said the Church will not allow the couple to get married in Catholic rites because some provisions of Padilla’s religion contradict with Catholic Church doctrines. According to ABS-CBN News, Cruz cited the Muslim provision that allows men to be married to more than one woman at a time.
"Sa panahon po ngayon kasi ay dapat tignan na natin ang wisdom, hindi na rule ng bawat religion... Sana in our own little way mapakita natin na may unity among religion lalo na usapin ng pagpapakasal," Padilla told radio dzMM. "Sana kami ang gamitin ng mga simbahan na example sa mga tao... Gawin kaming example na wala tayong division sa religion."
("We should focus on the wisdom, instead of the rules, of each religion. In our own little way, I hope we can show unity among different religions, particularly in marital matters... I hope Mariel and I could be an example for people to see that there is no division among religions.")
Padilla added that Rodriguez cried after learning of Cruz’s stand.
According to ABS-CBN News, Cruz is maintaining his statement, saying the matter is not something that can be appealed. He denied singling out the couple and said the rule applies to everybody.
