Iglesia ni Cristo supports RH Bill, calls natural family planning "immoral" and "ineffective"
(SPOT.ph) The influential Christian denomination Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) has pushed for the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill to be passed in a letter addressed to Rep. Rogelio Espina, House population and family relations committee chairman, reports ABS-CBN News.
In the letter dated October 2010, INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo said they support artificial planning methods that do not induce abortion. Manalo also criticized natural family planning methods, which the Catholic Church endorses, reports ABS-CBN News.
"These methods are not only unnatural and ineffective but they (are also) immoral, since they contradict the commandment that God has given to married couples. The Bible instructs married couples not to deprive one another of intimate marital relations for long, extended (periods) of time," Manalo said. "Further, any abstinence at all for a married couple is supposed to be with the mutual consent of husband and wife and not for the purpose of preventing pregnancies."
According to ABS-CBN News, INC is a member of the Interfaith Partnership for the Promotion of Responsible Parenthood (IPPRP) that supports the RH Bill, which they call "truly pro-life, pro-poor and pro-national development."
ABS-CBN News quoted the IPPRP’s chairperson, Bishop Rodrigo Tano, as saying, "There is a common denominator among all religious groups... That is the concern for the human person as well as the common good. To me, supporting life and promoting the common good should be considered religious and moral."
