Wednesdays declared "Plastic-Bag-Free Day" in five barangays
(SPOT.ph) Five barangays in Malabon and Navotas have declared Wednesday as "Plastic-Bag-Free Day," reports ABS-CBN News.
In celebration of the recent Earth Day, barangay officials of Hulong Duhat, Flores, Bayan-Bayanan and Dampalit in Malabon, and Tanza in Navotas signed a pledge that discourages plastic bag use in their barangays during Wednesdays. The barangay officials also gave away native baskets to promote eco-friendly shopping bags.
Caloocan City Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez Jr. said in a statement, "I invite other barangays in the country to implement their own plastic-bag-free days. This is our share for the healing of our ailing planet."
In another city, Muntinlupa, commercial establishments were earlier prohibited from using plastic bags and styrofoam. Last year, some supermarket chains started holding the "Reusable Bag Day" every Wednesday. The participating establishments include Ayala Malls, Ever Malls, Hi-Top Supermarket, Isetann Malls, Makro, Robinsons Supermart, Savemore, SM Hypermarts and SM Supermarkets.
