(SPOT.ph) At least three people were wounded this afternoon when violent protests met authorities sent to evacuate the informal settlers in Laperal Compound in Makati, which was gutted by fire a week ago, reports ABS-CBN News.
Some residents, including minors, used Molotov bombs, gunpowder and stones to prevent Makati authorities from implementing the evacuation, according to ABS-CBN reporter Niko Baua, who was also hit by rocks thrown by the settlers. On the other hand, Makati authorities used truncheons and water cannons.
According to Makati Public Information Office Chief Joey Salgado, a small group of residents is responsible for the violent confrontation. Police declared the situation under control at 3:38 p.m., reports Inquirer.net.
Makati authorities said they gave the informal settlers until 2:30 p.m. to evacuate the compound in Guadalupe Viejo, which was declared a danger zone after a fire razed about 900 houses in the area a week ago.
Yesterday, residents threw rocks and bottles at members of the demolition team and civil disturbance unit sent to the area, reports Inquirer.net.
Makati Mayor Junjun Binay said he has offered P20 million relief assistance to about 2,000 residents, reports ABS-CBN News. Relocation sites in Bulacan and Laguna were also offered to the residents but some were not satisfied with the areas while others wanted to move after a year.
