Fake tweets from hackers "kill" US President Barack Obama

(SPOT.ph) Hackers invaded the FoxNews.com Twitter account on July 4 and sent a series of tweets claiming that President Barack Obama had been assassinated, reports Reuters. FoxNews.com said in a statement that the matter is being investigated and clarified that the President spent the US' Independence Day with his family at the White House.

The first hacked tweet, according to Reuters, appeared at around 2 a.m. and said "@BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead. A sad 4th of July indeed. President Barack Obama is dead." The second read: "@Barack Obama has just passed. Nearly 45 minutes ago, he was shot twice in the lower pelvic area and in the neck; shooter unknown. Bled out." According to previous reports, a group called the ScriptKiddies have claimed responsibility for orchestrating the hoax.

The Secret Service, which is tasked to protect the President, said the agency is looking into the incident. "The Secret Service is investigating the matter and will conduct the appropriate follow-up," said spokesperson George Ogilvie. Meanwhile, Fox News Digital vice president and general manager Jeff Misenti said the network is working with Twitter to address the situation.  "We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts," he said.

Twitter spokesperson Jodi Olson, however, declined to say whether the company would amp up its security. "We don’t comment on specific accounts. In general, though, it’s always good to remind people of the importance of actively protecting their account credentials," she said.
