Azkals lose to Kuwait 2-1, miss chance to join 2014 World Cup
(SPOT.ph) The Philippine Azkals lost 2-1 (5-1 aggregate) to Kuwait in the second leg of their match yesterday, July 28, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, reports ABS-CBN News. After a good first-half score for the Azkals, Kuwait stunned the Pinoy team with two more late goals, ending the country’s dream to participate in the 2014 World Cup games.
Azkals team manager Dan Palami told the Philippine Daily Inquirer: "We would have loved to win it for the supporters of the team and for the country, but we knew Kuwait was at a different level," adding that the loss was a learning experience. Azkals coach Michael Weiss, meanwhile, couldn’t help feeling disappointed: "Everybody was going on the last drop of gasoline on the tank. We invested a lot and sacrificed. It’s just sad that we were not able to finish the job. It was visible we did our best."
According to sports analysts, the Philippine team, which is ranked 162 in FIFA, has come a long way having played together as a team for only six months and already rivaling clubs like Kuwait (ranked 95). Azkals will look into the SEA Games and the Challenge Cup next. Weiss also thanked the unwavering fans who gave the team a standing ovation after the match, reports GMA News.
