GMA News Online reports that Lanao del Sur Rep. Mohammed Hussein Pangandaman filed House Bill (HB) 5342, which would "require malls, groceries and banks to install X-ray security electronic scanners at their entrances." The bill  comes in the wake of shooting incidents in SM malls (North Edsa, Pampanga, and Iloilo).

The report noted that Pangandaman-whose alleged altercation with a security guard at the UP-Ayala Technohub was brought to media attention last September 5-filed the measure to ensure that security officers will conduct a thorough inspection of each person entering the establishments enumerated in the bill.

Pangandaman explained, "We cannot just make these guards responsible for these kinds of events because of lack of training and gadgets to attend to their duties."

The report revealed that under HB 5342, mall owners who will violate provisions in the measure will be imprisoned for six months to a year. The bill would have to get committee and plenary approval at both the House of Representatives and the Senate before it can be signed into law by President Noynoy Aquino.
