CNNGo reports that Japanese blogger Masaaki Tanaka, a former reporter and restaurant worker, who has been stuck in a Taiwanese airport for more than a month is finally going home. Tanaka’s case is akin to that in The Terminal, a movie which starred Tom Hanks.

According to the report, Tanaka, 42, got stranded at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on September 7 when he ran out of money. With no other options, he decided to remain at the airport without a valid visa. At one point, he was forced to survive on water and packets of soy sauce and wasabi which he got from a sushi shop. He also looked out for loose change. But, somehow, Tanaka was able to document his experience in a his blog.

After the Taiwanese branch of Apple Daily reported on Tanaka, many readers expressed sympathy for him. Several people have since donated money to Tanaka to cover his flight to Japan and the cash penalty of NT$6,000 that he must pay for overstaying his visa.

Tanaka is due to fly to Japan on October 26. The report did not say where he will be staying until then. (Most probably he will still be at the airport.)
