P-Noy gets flak from Rep. Gloria Arroyo’s camp for his "wheelchair joke"

Mark Merueñas of GMA News Online reports that Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s lawyer, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, is reacting to the joke that President Benigno Aquino III’s shared before a Filipino community in Auckland, New Zealand.

The report noted that Aquino had said: "You know, let me just share this joke. I kept laughing when I got it. It said, 'Our fellow Filipinos who are corrupt use luxurious cars, so expensive and fast. But when they want to escape, they use a wheelchair."

According to the report, Topacio felt that the president’s joke "targeted former Philippine president and current Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo." The report quoted Topacio, who said, "It trivializes the sickness of a person who is suffering from a disease and pokes fun at the anxiety her condition has brought to the Arroyo Family." Topacio also added: "Worse, by using the word 'corrupt,' the President is prejudging cases still in court, and his tasteless joke may be interpreted as an attempt to meddle into purely judicial affairs. The President must be reminded that under our Constitution, which he has sworn to uphold, every accused is presumed innocent."

Meanwhile, in another GMA News Online report written by Patricia Denise Chiu, deputy presidential spokesperson Abilgail Valte said,  "At the end of the day, it was a joke. Let's not take ourselves too seriously."
