7.4 million Pinoys use bushes, plastic bags as their makeshift "toilets"

Of at least 26 million Filipinos without access to sanitary toilets, 7.4 million do not even get to use toilets at all, resorting to "creative" ways to relieve themselves, Ira Pedrasa of ABS-CBNnews.com reports.

Of at least 26 million Filipinos without access to sanitary toilets, 7.4 million do not even get to use toilets at all, resorting to "creative" ways to relieve themselves, Ira Pedrasa of ABS-CBNnews.com reports.

The report quotes Dr. Mike Gnilo of Unicef Philippines as saying millions are forced to "go to the toilet behind bushes, in fields, plastic bags, ditches or along railway tracks; making them vulnerable to verbal, physical and sexual abuse." That number is growing, Gnilo said, and 12 percent more of the poorest of the poor now practice open defacation.

Gnilo, speaking on World Toilet Day, stressed the importance of providing access to sanitary toilets. "Sanitation contributes to economic development through improving school attendance, decreasing healthcare costs, and improving human productivity due to improved health," he said.
