Thieves in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu stole jewelry and money from Nuestra Señora de Regla Parish National Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the city’s patroness.
Rebelander Basilan of Sun.Star Cebu reports burglars made off with 69 necklaces, 70 rings, and 16 rings from the image of the Virgin of the Rule. "The burglars also opened the donation box below the image and stole an unknown amount, leaving only coins and a few small bills," the report said.
Police are considering an inside job since there were no signs of forced entry. Parish employees may have to undergo a polygraph test while police are also looking for workmen who repainted the church for the fiesta for the Virgin of the Rule last week.
"We condemn the act. We pray for the conversion of the one who perpetrated the crime," the report quotes Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma as saying.
