Manila City Mayor Alfredo Lim took potshots at his rival in 2013 Manila mayoral elections at a speech commemorating Bonifacio Day. RG Cruz of ABS-CBNnews.com reports Lim deplored how Tondo gangster Asiong Salonga was portrayed as a hero in the movies. Instead of idolizing Asiong Salonga, Lim said Manila citizens should instead emulate national hero Andres Bonifacio.
"Gamitin nating halimbawa si Gat Andres Bonifacio. Isang malinis, marangal, wagas at masinop na paglilingkod, hindi pagsasamantala sa pwesto o pagpapayaman sa pwesto, na nanakawin ang kwarta ng bayan. Hindi po yan ang Maynila," he said. Estrada played Asiong Salonga in one of his movies.
Estrada returned fire later that day, saying movies that were made about Mayor Lim’s life as a law enforcer did not do well at the box office. He added Lim would not have won in the 2010 elections if not for his endorsement. "In an apparent rebuttal of Lim, he also pointed out that he was born in Tondo like Bonifacio," the report said.
