At least 40 people were hit by stray bullets fired by irresponsible gun owners over the New Year’s Day break and that number could still rise, The Philippine National Police said.

Dennis Carcamo of the Philippine Star reports PNP Spokesperson Generoso Cerbo said that was just the initial count. "Cerbo said the count included Stephanie Nicole Ella who is now in a coma at the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City after being hit in the head by a stray bullet inside their house in Caloocan City," the report said.

Police have arrested 18 people for indiscriminate firing, 12 of those arrests were made in Metro Manila.
